Aviation systems problems in the B-52 were addressed in the Jolly Well program, being completed in 1964. One of those improvements was the inclusion of a Malfunction Detection & Recording (MADREC) unit.
The MADREC enabled the flight crew to detect failures of avionics & weapons systems, which could save vital minutes in beginning maintenance. MADREC was essential for ensuring functionality of the AGM-28 Hound Dog nuclear cruise missile.
The settings for the System Select dial are as follows: OFF; STDBY (Standby); AUTO; BOMB; RCU (Rocket Countermeasure); NAV (Navigation); HDG(Heading?); RADAR; AGM-28 (Hound Dog nuclear cruise missile).
Service Tag on this unit shows it was removed from a B-52H.
